Iguazu Falls

We flew to Iguazu which is at the border of Argentina and Brazil.  Cataratas del Iguazu National Park is a famous park with huge waterfalls (featured in Fresh Water of the Planet Earth series).  The size and scope of the falls is impossible to capture in pictures and is captured well by Planet Earth but we recommend taking a trip to see them in person!

The park consists of a series of boardwalks which were built over the many waterfalls, a seriously impressive construction project.  It was pretty weird to be looking over the edge of such big falls!

Aside from the boardwalks, there is a nice dirt trail through the jungle where we did some great bird watching and also saw a bunch of monkeys.

We walked on a boardwalk for over a kilometer across the river above the falls before reaching the viewpoint at Garganta del Diablo, the most impressive experience of the trip!  Here's the water just before it falls....

The water falls from almost a full circle of waterfalls at this location.

There is so much mist that you can't see the bottom of the falls.  It was a very wet and exhilerating experience to be above such massive waterfalls.  Brazil is on the other side of the falls.

Here's a fun shot of a monkey hanging out in a tree watching us.

We saw three wild toucans while in the park, a real treat.

On our last day in Iguazu we went to Guiri Oga which is an animal rehabilitation center.  The people there care for animals that have been hurt or taken from illegal traffickers.  There were a few toucans and many other types of birds, as well as some other animals.
